I went on a trip to Ambleside for inspiration in 2012. I really loved the shapes and the textures of the various different fungi that could be found around the lakes and the forests of the Lake District.

So I chose to reate a sculpture inspired by those fungi. I wrapped embossed fabric around a rock that I found whilst hiking, using embroidery to create a mossy texture. I added pieces of driftwood found by the side of the lake and used clay to create the mushrooms.

I gave the sculpture balance by adding dried foliage.

I love working with potters clay, but it's so delicate if you haven't got the facilities to fire it, and I found that my mushrooms quickly deteriorated and ended up broken. In future I ould definitely look into using different clays that could be painted to mimic the qualities that I liked in the potters clay.
